Scripture Devotion

You lay down; another stays awake.

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8 (KJV)

Reflection

The peace and the sleep come together, and both rest on a single reason: thou, LORD, only. Not the doors being locked, not the week's problems being solved, not tomorrow being secured — only the LORD makes the dwelling safe. The safety is located in a keeper, not in circumstances arranged well enough to permit rest. That word only is the release. If safety depended on everything being handled, no one would ever lie down in peace, because something is always unhandled. Saturday's rest is possible precisely because the keeping isn't yours to do. You lay down; another stays awake. That's the arrangement that lets the eyes close.

Motivational Quote

Beauty still left — look for it.

Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.
Anne Frank

Application

Anne Frank wrote of beauty and happiness from confinement and fear — which strips the line of any easy sentimentality. It's not naive; it's a discipline of attention chosen against the circumstances. On a Saturday, the practice is simple: actually look for the beauty still present, the ordinary and overlooked kind, and let it do its quiet work.
