Scripture Devotion

Number the days — that's what makes them count.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
Psalm 90:12 (KJV)

Reflection

The prayer is not to count the days, as if the point were an accurate tally, but to number them in the older sense — to weigh them, to treat them as limited and therefore precious. The request is for the awareness that the supply is finite, because that awareness changes how each one gets spent. And the purpose clause is telling: that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Numbering the days isn't meant to produce dread or urgency for its own sake — it's meant to produce wisdom. Knowing the days are counted is what makes a person spend them well. Sunday is the natural day to number them, and to bring the coming week under that longer view.

Motivational Quote

Claim the future — where others have resigned.

The essence of optimism is that it takes no account of the present, but it is a source of inspiration, of vitality and hope where others have resigned; it enables a man to hold his head high, to claim the future for himself.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Application

Bonhoeffer wrote of hope from a prison cell, facing execution — which is the only context in which the words carry their full weight. His optimism isn't a mood about the present; it's a claim staked on the future, held onto where others have quit. Bring the coming week into that kind of hope: not a denial of what's hard, but a refusal to resign. Vigilate.
