New every morning — not yesterday's leftovers.
“It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Reflection
This sits in the middle of the Bible's most sorrowful book — Lamentations, a sustained cry over a ruined city — which is exactly what gives it weight. From the depths of grief, the writer locates a mercy that hasn't failed: we are not consumed. However bad it is, it isn't the end, and that alone is mercy. Then the phrase that has anchored countless mornings: new every morning. The mercy doesn't carry over as leftovers; it's fresh with each dawn, a new supply for the new day. Saturday's morning has its own portion, not yesterday's remainder. Great is the faithfulness that resupplies it daily, grief or no grief.
